There’s noise, and then there’s NOISE. And this “album” (if you think 14 brutal sonic blast that might deafen you if your speaker volume is turned up too high can even be considered “music”) is absolutely, unequivocally NOISE. I’ve heard people describe Wolf Eyes, or White House, or Harry Pussy as being “unlistenable” but I’m pretty sure this album takes the cake. I couldn’t get more than three or four seconds into any single “song” before I had to move on to the next track. Maybe that’s the intention here, I’m not really sure, but if it is… it works. Don’t get me wrong, I love Merzbow and other Japanese noise acts, but…I feel like this is intentionally trying to annoy me.
Maybe it’s supposed to mirror an acid trip? I’ve never dabbled in LSD before. I’m not a fan of psychedelics because I already know the fragility of my mind will now allow me to have anything less than a horrible trip. You know that guy who never takes acid and then he tries it once and he winds up lost and gone forever? That would be me. I’m certain of it. Plus, I mean…why would anybody want to alter their perception and experience earth-shattering revelations when you could just pop a handful of Valium and be a happy, drooling catatonic mess?
For those who are unaware, Masonna started in 1987 in Osaka, Japan. It is the project of Yamazaki Maso. It is one of the most notorious and well-known Japanese noise projects during the past 25 years. Sometimes Masonna means Mademoiselle Anna Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Aureole (French for “Miss Bloody Anne, Or Our Aureoled Nymphomania”) or Mystic Another Selection Of Nurses Naked Anthology. I prefer just Masonna. This one’s called Frequency LSD. According to the record label Alien 8, “Frequency L.S.D. is highlighted by tripped out tonal works intertwined within its overall chaos, giving it a much different feel than past efforts. This recording features 14 ear wrenching tracks and is beautifully packaged in a limited edition special packaging (5 1/4″ by 7 1/4″).”
