Yen Pox – New Dark Age

Not to be confused with the Polvo album “Celebrate The New Dark Age”. But I like to think that this was recorded as an homage to the aforementioned Polvo record. “New Dark Age” was released in 2000 on Malignant Records. It was produced and arranged in 1998 at Camp Concentration and mastered at Malignant Sound Technologies in Tucson, Arizona.

I guess this is technically dark ambient metal, but that’s not really how I would classify it. To my ears it is a drone record that happens to be classified as metal due to the overwhelming presence of distorted, gritty tones. Then again, Yen Pox recorded a split with Troum, who recorded a Mystery Sea CD-r and they’re on the lighter/dreamier side of drone. Yen Pox’s MySpace page (if that’s still relevant) lists their genre(s) as ambient/experimental/industrial. So there’s that.

Also from the duo’s MySpace, Steven Hall & Michael JV Hensley create “…a mixture of suffocating atmospheres and sparse, cinematic drones mixed with somber melodies.” Elsewhere their sound has been called “a journey among distant stars, into silence and infinite void,” and “the tortured sounds of the living molten motel underneath the earth’s crust.”

So, yeah. It’s earthy. And somber. And ambient. And metal?
