Gore – Hart Gore / Mean Man’s Dream

Heavy, menacing instrumental rock (maybe it’s metal? maybe it’s punk?) from The Netherlands. Strangely, this one has a lyric insert…and its an instrumental album! A quick web search enabled me to discover that they are a thematic background for the music. There was another band who copied this technique more recently, but I don’t quite remember who it was. Hart Gore will bludgeon your ears with its unyielding riffs and intense rhythms. Gore’s sound has been referred to as “horror film metal,” which I guess means it recalls the imagery of slasher films or cinematic serial killer sprees. Dusted Reviews says, “Here’s instrumental rock that leaves you to fill in the pieces. Their music is not necessarily narrative; more of a study in metal aggression than a contained story. In essence, these songs put the semblance of foreboding character from your nightmares behind shatterproof glass, allowing you to examine for yourself and fill in the blanks.”

Originally released in 1987 by Ediesta Records (later re-mastered and re-issued in ’95), Mean Man’s Dream (Gore’s second album) recalls The Swans or Flipper with brutal, pulsating rhythms and really aggressive, thrashing guitars. A lot of stop-stars and time changes. Like Hart Gore, this one is completely instrumental. You might even say it’s in the vein of Slint or Bastro. The recording is impeccable, with great drum sounds that were actually not recorded by Steve Albini! Drummer Danny Lommen recalls Dale Crover, but maybe even better? Simon Reynolds wrote back in ’87, “Imagine the deadest, most inhuman moments in Black Sabbath, Black Flag, Butthole Surfers, Killing Joke, Swans. Imagine if someone collated all this bludgeoning sludge, this scatomanic churning, into a seamless cycle of butchery without end or purpose. That’s the sound of Gore.” He also calls them “Metallica at 16rpm.” This is ripped directly from the vinyl. The tracklist is listed below but there are only two files to download.
