Wednesday Only Comes Once a Week

The title of this post is a reference to my dear friend Ilya, who recently discovered that a Tuesday is a good day to come home from work and lose yourself in a cloud of smoke because, “it only comes once a week.” For a burn-out, he can be kinda perceptive, sometimes!

That’s what we in the biz (the biz being an abbreviation for show business, which I am not involved with at all) call a “backhanded compliment.”

I spoke to Jason Molina today, he’s still down for meeting in Chicago, I’ve gotta call him when I get into town so we can set something up. That was the best news I received all day. I’ve been at work, which isn’t all that exciting.

I had a few responses to my “Death of MySpace” commentary at the end of yesterday’s blog. Matt wrote, “It’s the JSA effect.” (JSA of course refers to Junior Statesmen of America, an extra curricular some of my friends and I joined in high school.) “Its fucking gay. I don’t even use MySpace but I come on it every few days or so to see if I have any messages (which I usually don’t) but I’ll have tons of friends requests from stupid bands I don’t even know who are trying to get the word out. The signal to noise ratio sucks. Wait for the next cool, underground, hip, social networking site to come out. Better yet, you create it. Because you’ll be really rich, because all the geeks need a place to go that isn’t so run over, and then the hipsters then will need a place that isn’t so mainstream, and then all the mainstream people will need to find the next cool undiscovered thing where everyone else already found.” I think what he means is, there is a perpetual cycle of creative geeks inventing things (in this case online social networking sites) that eventually become co-opted by hipsters looking for fun outside the mainstream, and eventually the mainstream comes along and takes control away from the hipsters, thus ensuring its inevitable death. Just like JSA!
