Sometimes it helps to get out of town — even if it’s just for a few hours! So today featured a trip to Santa Catalina Island, a shade over 22 minutes off the California coast. You have to take a ferry (or a helicopter) to get there. It takes about an hour by boat. The population is small. You can eat, shop, parasail, lay out by the beach, hike, take a zip-line tour…they have bison! I haven’t seen bison since South Dakota almost 7 years ago. I guess they were filming a movie on the island and brought over about a dozen bison, but after shooting ended the production company realized it’d be too expensive to cart the beasts back to the mainland. So they were abandoned, and somehow the population has managed to thrive there.
Dinner tonight was at The Gorbals. Broccoli with soy, chilies and vinegar. Chicken liver mousse, pan con tomate. Bacon-wrapped matzoh balls. Confit beef tongue, romesco. Pretty good dishes. The mousse and the tongue were probably the highlights for me. I’ve heard good things about the burger from my friend Damon, but that’ll have to wait for another day.
