Happy Twin Peaks “The Return” day, readers!
Some of you have waited, what, 25 years for this day? I’ve waited…seven. I think I watched Twin Peaks for the first time in 2009 or 2010. Tom introduced Nicci and I to it. I remember finding out — upon the reveal of Laura Palmer’s killer — that Ilya had accidentally spoiled it for us while we were watching that first episode, but neither of us had noticed. I’ve been re-watching the series (minus the middle of Season 2, if I never see another Nadine scene it’ll be too soon) for the past week or two. I’m on the second to last episode now, so I should be starting “The Return” tonight.
This would be the perfect time for an all Julee Cruise mix tape, but alas…I’ve been compiling other tunes to highlight. Julee Cruise will have to wait. I hear she’s appearing in “The Return,” so maybe we’ll get some new music as well. I’m sure that’d make Stephen in Japan happy…
I wanted to mention something quickly from an email I received this week. Back in 2005 my buddy Anthony  started a website called the Hype Machine. I’d met him a few years earlier at a Godspeed You! Black Emperor show and in the years to follow we hung out a bunch. I met some amazing people via Anthony. When he found out I had a website where I wrote about music he added it to his aggregator, and every time I posted an MP3 his site indexed it and allowed it to be streamed by a worldwide audience. I speak without hyperbole when I say that without Hype Machine, Swan Fungus probably would not exist. His site has referred millions of people here over the past 12 years. Some of you reading this post probably discovered me via Hype Machine. Maybe you remember the first song you heard that made you click through to this page. Just like Stephen in Japan! Anyway…These days online advertising doesn’t pay what it used to. What Hype Machine receives in ad revenue is no longer enough to sustain the service. As a result, they are currently undergoing a crowdfunding effort. I ask that you please consider supporting them. I wouldn’t be writing this post without them, and many of you wouldn’t be reading this post without them. Let’s help keep ’em going.
