Various Artists – Extreme Music From Africa

Yesterday it was …From Women, today it is …From Africa.

There’s some controversy surrounding this album. Whereas yesterday’s compilation featured known artists who have performed live, released recordings, and are generally known to exist…none of the artists included on the Extreme Music From Africa comp. have ever recorded anything else, ever. It is believed that “Project Coordinator” and compiler William Bennett (of Whitehouse/Cut Hands fame) is responsible for this disc and likely made up these aliases to disguise his identity. Although never publicly stated, pretty much everyone assumes this is a “con” perpetrated by Bennett. In light of his most recent musical output with Cut Hands, it’s pretty clear that you should accept these as products of the crazy African noise underground with winks and nudges. Either way, it’s pretty fucking cool.

“Africa – the dark continent of the tyrants, the beautiful rituals, the tropical fruits, the pygmies, the guns, the mercenaries, the tribal wars, the unusual diseases, the abject poverty, riches, the widespread executions, the praetorian colonialists, the exotic wildlife – and the music.” “Special thanks to Jonathan Azande of the University of Zimbabwe.”

Wink wink, nudge nudge.
