Ionosphere – Angular Momentum

From Aversion Online:

“As can often be expected from the Loki/Power and Steel camp, here is some absolutely beautiful dark ambient out of Germany, consisting largely of ethereal hums and drones with an encompassing atmosphere and lots of deep, cavernous resonance. The moods of the pieces are generally very consistent and droning in a way, with varying degrees of either a certain sinister quality or alternately a spacy sort of openness fitting of the record’s artwork and song titles like “Gravitational Repulsion” or “Probing the Darkness”, among others (the latter of which is one of the more significantly up front and menacing compositions). Variations and accent textures are common, but those thick low-end pulsations are certainly the backbone around which this almost hypnotic material revolves. “Deep Interior Research” is a bit more rhythmic in its surging back and forth, blended with some minimal crunching distortion and using slightly more intricate vocal samples (which are apparent elsewhere, always a bit muffled and detuned). “Gravitational Repulsion” uses a few more blatantly percussive sounds, though nothing overbearing; while “Quantum Mechanics” changes things up a tad with sounds of softly crashing waves before the in some ways more minimal title track brings back the mechanical percussive backing textures and a few more electronic/machinated middleground elements. Closer “Another World” is potentially appropriately titled, in that its more structured and loosely “musical” leanings are certainly a departure from the preceding nine tracks, though in theory the base of the track is along similar lines. The disc comes in a nice digipack with minimal imagery and colors that has sort of an astral look, which ties in with the brief quotation inside that reads, “In the very distant the proton will decay, all the stars will run out of fuel and be engulfed by black holes, which in turn will radiate all their mass, leaving the universe a vast, cold, and lifeless place…” Another superb release from this quality label. The entirety of the disc flows almost perfectly, and a massive, clean recording quality knits everything together even better. Certainly worth checking out for those fond of fairly stripped down dark ambient soundscapes that follow a clear-cut path. (8/10)”
