Mars – 78

A long time ago, in a blog post miles away, I shared an album called John Gavanti with you. The No-Wave oepra writen by Mark Cunningham, Sumner Crane and China Berg of Mars, with Ikue Mori and Arto Linsday of DNA, was a brilliant, noisy affair, and a fine introduction to two amazing and innovative New York bands from the ’70s.

Mars was formed in ’75. They only played about two dozen shows in New York over the course of their brief existence. They first took the stage at CBGB’s in 1977, and their last gig was at Max’s Kansas City in 1978. They recorded a 7″ single, and a live, self-titled EP. Both of these releases were compiled by Lydia Lunch and released as 78 in the year 1986 on her own label, Widowspeak Records. The tracks on that album were slightly remixed and tweaked by Foetus (aka Jim Thirlwell). While this might seem exciting to some, apparently there were many complaints about Thirlwell’s “tweaks,” which led to another reissue of the compilation on a different label, with a different title.

In any event, you would be wise to enjoy Mars. For if you don’t, I can only declare that you are an ape-eared fool with absolutely shit taste in music.
