Sunday Mix Tape Number 249

Tonight being a celebration of all things Hollywood, I thought I’d point you to this amazing Flickr album I discovered yesterday via Facebook. It might not be that interesting to you if you’ve never visited Los Angeles, or spent a night crawling along the Sunset Strip. As someone who now calls this place home, I find it impossibly cool. The album is called “Billboards On Sunset – 1974-5” and the photographer goes by the handle LarryTheFrog. Considering how trite or uninteresting billboards are in this city these days (except for the advertisement for The Room that stayed up for years), this gallery and the glimpse into the past it provides is remarkable.

So how are my Oscar picks from yesterday fairing? Uh…I just got home from work. Let me check.

My two picks for screenplay awards won, which is unsurprisingly because I’m such a gifted writer. Clearly I can pick the best screenplay from a list of five nominees. The girl who I thought would win best supporting actress lost, and the guy who I thought would win best supporting actor lost. Meryl Streep won best actress, Clooney lost best actor, Malick lost best director and The Descendants lost best picture. Oh, Hollywood. Why do you live the French so much? And why do seem to only adore films that stroke your collective ego? Films about film! It’s meta, sure, but that’s gotta win! Bullshit.

Hey, here’s a mix tape for you. And remember to check This Is My Jam tonight (and every Sunday and Thursday) to hear what song I’m loving most during a given week.

RULES for uninitiated noobs: I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I’ll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. I don’t think there’s a theme this week, but I used two Ennio Morricone songs from compilations entitled Mondo and Giallo. God I admire Ennio Morricone. The goal of this endeavor, as always, is to pique your interest in these artists so you’ll support the artists and buy their albums.
