The Clouds – Jeannine / You Tell Me Lies 7″

Almost no information about this record exists anywhere on the Internet. The only reference to it that I could find is on a Yahoo Group called “The Texas 60s Music Refuge.” The entire conversation consisted of:

“Anyone out there remember a Houston area band named The Clouds? Would be interested in hearing any recollections about them. Also, they released at least one single (“Jeannine”) on Huey Meaux’s Kidd Records. Would guess it came out circa ’65-’66…apparently it was a local hit…looking for catalog # and other label details.”

“The Clouds were from Baytown, TX. Kidd Records was owned by Tommy Bergin, not Meaux. “Jeannine” / “You Tell Me Lies” (Kidd 1333) came out in early ’66. Not a local hit…musically decent teen pop / garage single, nothing too exciting.”

Yeah, says THAT guy. Take a listen to the B-Side, “You Tell Me Lies” and tell me that it’s not really, really good. It sounds like an outtake from the Velvet Underground’s self-titled album sessions. Although this record eventually ended up in someone else’s hands (not my own), I made damn sure to grab scans of the labels and rip the audio to MP3 for purposes of preservation. When you find a killer track like “You Tell Me Lies” on an undocumented 45, you definitely take notice.

It wouldn’t surprise me if this became a collectors item in the future on the strength of that tune. Check it out, let me know what you think, and if anyone out there wants to color in the rest of the story on The Clouds by all means do so!
