Surplus Stock – Holland In Not

Experimental/synth band from Germany led by Bob Giddens, who produced the first DAF recordings in the UK. They traversed the musical landscape by recording albums that ranged from minimalist/avant-garde electronic music to, in Giddens’ own words, “Fake Jazz”. After Holland In Not they signed to Rough Trade. Their recorded output after this wasn’t nearly as interesting as the album released by Outatune in 1980. They broke up not long after signing to Rough Trade.

The sound is minimal synth with some dark overtones. Strong experimental tendencies set this apart from some of the other German post-punk bands of the era. Moreso than their peers Surplus Stock could have fit in nicely in the UK, alongside bands such as the Fall, the Residents and the Pop Group.
