Melodic Energy Commission – Stranger In Mystery

In the realm of private label post-Hawkwind groups, MEC was a sadly overlooked prog/psych band from Canda. In fact, the band actually featured a former member of the Hawk, Del Dettmar on EMS synth and “Delatronics.” The other members were responsible for vocals, guitar, piano, gongs, percussion, shepherds pipes (!?!?), dulcimer, flute, khaen (!!!) and thermion among others. Yeah, this one’s pretty far-out sounding, with a lot of spacerock goodness mixed with honest-to-goodness hippie tribal shit. Somehow it all works together. I don’t know, maybe I just have a soft spot for psych bands who can employ a good glockenspiel (see: Tower Recordings, et al.). This was the group’s first studio effort. They also realized Migration Of The Snails a year after Stranger… in 1980 and M = e/c2 (duh!) in 1982.

With lyrics like, “You’re so scientific. So close to logic. / If you only… / Placed strategic, technically perfect / If you only knew / the whereabouts of other realms.” you know you’re in for some weird fucking hippie prog shit. MEC gets it right.
