Room For One

This was written March 17th, 2005. A few days after I officially started this blog! (I don’t have a recent free-write to share so I went into the archives)

Square one says you have begun, and this is your path to salvation. The journey will be impossible. You shouldn’t bother starting. The end for you is just ahead. Took a pill to fall asleep and forgot my own name. Doomed to believe we’re chasing our fate, make no mistake, you have no choices in this life. Everything is planned by some figure on high. You awaken to the sound of crashing cars. Don’t fret, this is not the worst life can get. Square two says what is in store for you: a bleak future with no beautiful blue sky on the other side, a wall covered in ivy you are unable to climb. Slick surfaces prohibit you from finding your grip and hurtling yourself over the top. It doesn’t even matter anymore. The core of this earth is not hot enough to kill you even if you want it to. You’ll have to find some other way to make a great escape. Square three says always be prepared, don’t be scared, even when you’re face to face with your worst fears. Convince yourself that it’s just a game and each day is a chance to prove your worth. First you close your eyes and strive to hear the sound of your synapses firing away as ideas are born. Come what may. The lowest of lows, the murky depths of the swamplands sucks at your feet and beckons you under. How long can you breathe underwater? Square four says move forward six spaces and move back five, if you make it alive you’ll be ashamed to cry. The inaction of others prevents you from moving, you’re dwelling on something instead of improving. Square five says if you’ve made it this far, you’re still alive. Not sure how you made it, but you’re closer to a place where you will be safe. Each night is a fight to close your eyes and drive sleep until morning. Have no fear, the end of the world will never arrive. Square six says this is it, the last stop on your travels. It’s time to wind down and greet the new morning with solace, design, and heartbreak in your eyes. Gray skies at dawn and a bitter chill. I will send you a message across the wire. Hope will rises from the ashes of the place where we reside. I wanted to be sure to reach you. I’m running out of space and the wind against my face is a block of ice. Square seven says welcome to heaven. You’re the only one who has ever made it. Alone again.
