This mega-rare Spiritualized release was offered only to members of the band’s fanclub by mail-order in 1993. The live recording was made on November 21st, 1992 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California and at the previous show at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. I know that the CD was initially pressed in a run of 1000 copies, but it was later re-released in a 5000-copy “normal” pressing. It comes packaged in a silver foil-embossed cardboard sleeve. I have no idea how many copies of the vinyl were pressed. It was released by the new defunct UK label Dedicated. I’ve seen CD copies for as cheap as $50 at record stores, but I’ve never come across a copy of the vinyl. It does exist, though…
The music is phenomenal. I didn’t see Spiritualized for the first time until April of 1998, so I can’t imagine what a show from the fall of 1992 would have been like. This artifact from that era sounds amazing. “Take Good Care Of It” starts with Jason Pierce’s somber vocals mourning over a simple melody that slowly expands and builds to a peak before evaporating. “Medication” sounds as good as any live rendition I’ve ever heard. “Shine A Light” — all fifteen minutes of it — is a total mindfuck. I adore it.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a negative word to say about Spiritualized (just don’t ask me about Amazing Grace, I’ve only heard the album twice), so I can’t really find fault with this album. I just wish it was longer, but hey, I’ll settle for the Royal Albert Hall live album and its sixteen minute rendition of “Cop Shoot Cop”. By the way, if anyone has soundboard-quality Spiritualized recordings from any era, send ’em over!
