“I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, listening to the CD over and over, but never bothering to write about it. I admit that’s bad behavior for a critic, but Periscope, like the other Colour Haze albums, is too good for multitasking. If I’m going to listen to it, I’m going to listen to it and say to hell with everything else.
Originally released on vinyl only in 2004 after the double album, Los Sounds de Krauts, this album has the band continuing to define their signature sound. There’s the familiar distorted growl that stems from Kyuss, and rumbling underneath are jazzier rhythms and fluid bass playing. Mixed together, you get a highly emotive s t y l e of music that’s as introspective as it’s uplifting. The band finds a natural groove and lets it grow naturally. Nothing’s forced – it’s an incredibly organic sound. The best way of describing Colour Haze is to call it “beautiful.â€
Which explains why I’ve had such a rough time writing about Periscope. But there’s no sense in me being greedy and hoarding it all to myself. While the definitive albums are still their self-titled and Los Sounds de Krauts (in that order), Periscope is an essential release and should not be ignored. For those who already own the vinyl version, the CD comes with a bonus track, “Transmitter.†It’s another great Colour Haze song. That’s all you need to know.” – Stoner Rock
