F/i – Paradise Out Here

This is one of my favorite psychedelic albums that was not recorded during the 60s or 70s. In fact, It was originally released by Huamn Wrechords in 1989! While everybody else was hooked on grunge and alternative rock, F/i were expanding upon their heavily experimental sound (see: Why Not Now? Alan! and Space Mantra) and infusing more “space rock” into their already mind-bending compositions.

A voiceover from the Wicked Witch opens the album, her speed slowed and slurred and almost inaudible. “Now my beauties. Something with poi-son in it I think. With poison in it. But attractive to the eye and soothing to the smell. Ha-ha-ha-ha. Poppies. Poppies. Poppies will put them to sleep. Sle-ee-p. Now they’ll sle-ee-p.” Then, lift off. Option Sound Choice described Paradise Out Here as “Plenty of drones, fuzz, pulsing and sine wave hypno-patterns from burning guitars and electronics that space you out, but pump you up too! There’s the endless wave the endless high the endless riff and F/i. This is one of the most exciting US bands working today, and deserve lots more recognition.”

When it was re-releasd on CD by Lexicon Devil a couple years ago, I found myself working out to this album on an almost daily basis. In hindsight, this was a bad idea because it made getting high and enjoying to this album almost impossible. I just wanted to run whenever I heard it. The original vinyl was limited to 300 copies, and I just recently found one for my collection. Cheap, too! Please enjoy these epic space rock tunes, and do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with the rest of the F/i catalog. I’ll post more in the future.
