Interview: Steve Albini

…Was my originally scheduled interview with Steve Albini out in Chicago at his studio, Electrical Audio. It fell through (related entry 1, related entry 2), there were schedule conflicts and last minute cancellations. But an agreement was reached that today was going to be our make-up date. I called over at about 4:15p.m. EST and we had about a forty minute chat. It was pretty laid back, he reminisced about Lounge Ax a lot and had some good points about Chicago, punk rock, and politics, but at this point I’ve already interviewed for other sources (Jason Molina, Jeff Mueller, Tim Midgett and Rich Fessler) so there was a lot of repetition and familiar answers. Overall I’d grade it a B interview. He called Bubba Kadane a crybaby. That part was hilarious.

Nevertheless, here are three audio clips for you. I tried to use the speakerphone on my cellular telephone (I don’t own a land-line with a speaker capability) so our conversation was placed in the hands of an imperfect technology. It turned out alright. I recorded the conversation using the reliable old cassette recorder, as well as my computer’s hard drive and microphone input. There might be some hard-drive whir in the background but I think everything is pretty intelligible.
