Work was canceled today because the weather channel reported that IMPENDING DOOM was looming just over the horizon. In the end we only got about an inch of snow. Sure, I don’t mind being able to sleep in, but I could use the money that I would have reaped from an 8-hour shift.
As I was falling asleep at 2am I suddenly started writing a new introduction to the Louisville chapter of my book in my head, so I had to get up and stumble over to the computer and write a few paragraphs. When I woke up this morning I wrote a few more, linked it to what I already have and pronounced myself done writing for the day. I figure it’s more interesting a reader would be more interested in reading about my trip between interviews than reading blase, basic rock-journalist introductions that describe each band’s history. If they want to know who got writing credits for what song they’ll just have to use the Interweb like the rest of us.
After I finished writing I called Steve Albini at Electrical. Chad picked up and quickly handed the phone off. I told Steve that I knew he was going to be out of the country during the first week of May, but what were his plans for the last week of April? He said he had a session ending on the 23rd, and he was leaving on the 30th, and the 24th, 25th, and 26th were his off days. I told him that I would be in Chicago that week, and he said great, call when I get to town. So I guess I’m spending my birthday this year in Chicago, perhaps interviewing Albini.
My cousin is getting married April 21st, so I’ll hop in the car on the 22nd, get there probably during the evening on the 23rd (770 miles, 12.5 hours = 8 hours day one, 4.5 hours day two) and have three days to find a good time to hang out and chat, probably at the studio or maybe somewhere else. I don’t really know at the moment. On my way back I *might* stop in Louisville to see what’s up with Jim James, but I have to get in touch with him first to see if he’ll even be in town at the time. Other than that, I’ll probably spend the rest of the week slowly working my way back to Jersey. It should be a nice vacation that will provide me with the ability to really add a lot of weight to the book with those two gentlemen contributing their time and voices to my story. Nervous anticipation is already stirring.
