Hey! Been trying to blog you. Ilya and I were up to our old tricks last evening, hanging out at his place in Jersey City and recording sound to a laptop computer. Whereas last time my lead vocals were somehow deleted by the computer, I think this time the computer clipped his backing vocals from the mix… Because there sure seemed like more of ’em when we were listening back to the song. There’s some sour notes in there, but it is not really all that important. This ain’t no Sub Pop single of the month club! In any event, since everybody is raving about these mp3 things, I’ll share one below, with the words to the tune (so you can cringe along!). So far, the response seems to be somewhere between, “Wow, it makes me want to do heroin!” and “Wow, it sounds like the Indigo Girls, but less masculine.”
I gave this song the most pretentious title all four of my brain cells could muster.
SUMMER IS GONE AND YOUR FACE BEARS A LOOK OF PENANCE
on the banks of a quarry where i make my home
i lay with a rock for a pillow and the water’s steady drone.
there’s an echo rolling like a church bell’s chime
and i’m painting her figure on the backs of my eyes (it’s not right).
one night she arrived and stood at the edge of the wood.
she refused to step forward for fear of feeding her vice.
rainfall fills the quarry
reflecting the crescent moon.
she sang a refrain
until the blush left her face.
“Sleep now prince, I’ll return someday totally unashamed.”
