Approaching the Outer Marker

I’m up to chapter twenty of the book. Of course, this is a slight misnomer, because–with the exception of the four huge chapters–most are no longer than a few pages. This week’s goal is to convert the Jason Molina interview from question/answer into full-on prose, splice up the Albini interview and interject his responses to other people’s quotes where necessary, and get started on figuring how to incorporate the information given to me by Joey Burns into a new Tucson chapter. And that’s all I’m going to mention about the book this week.

I’ve been at work sixteen of the last twenty-four hours of my life. I’m a bit tired. Also, I hate these wireless blue teeth earphones (is that even the plural of blue tooth? must one pluralize both “tooth” and “earphone”?). I try to say ‘hello’ to someone and they’re not even paying attention because they’re having an entirely unrelated conversation with someone who isn’t present. Or they’re standing in the corner pressing buttons and it looks like they’re poking themselves in the head like a mental patient. At least when a person is holding a phone I have the option of waiting until they hang up or nod in approval so I can begin speaking. Now, dirty looks abound when I do not notice that piece of plastic clasped around a person’s ear. ‘As if,’ they’re probably thinking. Technological innovations have already alienated us enough, we don’t need new ways to distance ourselves from one another.
