I’m throwing this mix together quickly while I take a break from an extracurricular project I’m working on with a Wednesday due-date. Once I’ve finished it I’ll have some time to share new goodies with you, like the seemingly undocumented Two:Dot record that fell into my lap the other day, and a silly private press find with some of the best WOC (“writing on cover”) I’ve yet to come across. I intend to digitize those both this week and post them here. This coming Saturday I’m putting together a 2015 Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout “horizontal” tasting with a friend, so I’ll probably write about that if I’m not too hungover a week from today. Beyond that, not much is new to share in my world. As usual I’ll keep all the personal goings on close to my chest because I’ve shown those hands in the past and they rarely yield positive results. See? I told you things were going to be different in 2016. This website will be 11 years old next week — and I’ll be 33 next month — and I’m finally learning not to share every private detail of my life with a bunch of complete strangers. Thanks, maturity!
I’ve been digging the shit out of the new album by Dan Barrett (one half of Have A Nice Life) solo album, which was recorded under the moniker Giles Corey. It kind of follows in the tradition of HANL’s Deathconsciousness in the fact that it’s a package deal with an album and an accompanying text intended to be read while listening to the music. It’s a heady concept and dark as all hell, but I love everything about it. I’ve been spending a lot of time writing a rather bleak story of late and Giles Corey has served as the perfect tone-setter for getting myself in a bleak-enough headspace to work. I’m also jealous I wasn’t smart enough to coin the term “Ghost Music” to describe the kinds of dark songs I used to write when I was in my Goth Brooks phase.
The Flenser reissued the Giles Corey record, which was originally released on CD by Barrett’s label. You can hear it here but you should buy it from here. And now here’s your mix tape. With one random Oasis song thrown in the middle to fuck up an otherwise decent flow.
