When Bob from Freakbeat Records sent this album my way, it came with the suggested tagline “the most homemade record ever?” The cover is a work of absolute genius, a variation on the oft seen Southern California stock cover theme that was so perfectly captured in Enjoy The Experience. On this copy, Ms. Norman glued a black and white photo of her face on the front cover. She also hand wrote “33 1/3 Stereo” near the top edge of the cover (in case you didn’t already know), and “Jean Waste, Piano” beneath her name. The track listing is a bit screwy, as the labels list four songs on side 1 when there’s more like six or seven total. What’s more, the label reads MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE but the cover says A JOYFUL NOISE. My guess is I’ll never know which one is the true title. All in all, this is about as lo-fi and “homemade” as they come.
As for the music…well…it’s not my cup of tea. Lots of standards. Lots of religious tunes. It’s just piano and Norman’s vibrato-crazed voice. Very operatic. Very hard for me to recommend. That said, it’s worth it just for the unique cover.
