On Tuesday night I was lucky enough to receive an invite to see Caspian perform at the Teragram Ballroom downtown. While I did not post the last time they were in town I did gave away tickets to the show. This time I made sure to capture some images of the performance to share with you. If only to poke fun of Ian that his band opened for Caspian in…2008, was it? “Just think,” I asked Ian “that could have been YOU on stage last night in LA.” He didn’t seem amused.

Written during the same sessions that saw the birth of what would become Dust And Disquiet, “Castles High, Marble Bright” speaks to the sense of stubbornly epic, dramatically determined optimism Caspian has been trying to emulate with their music for the past twelve years. After a four year journey that took the band to thirty countries and saw them performing over 150 times, they began to view this song as both a celebration of the completion of this chapter of their lives, as well as an affirmation of their hopes for the future. Between you and me, I think the song very much embodies a hopeful spirit. Listening to it for the first time the other night as it enveloped the ballroom it was easy to pinpoint why the band is so happy with the composition. First of all, major key, right? I think it’s in C? The happiest note in the world. I wouldn’t say it stands in contrast to Dust And Disquiet, but where the album broods or projects an anxious intensity, this track rings with optimism.
