Isn’t it better when I don’t post every day? Then you can click on the blog or a post will pop up in your RSS feed and you’ll be pleasantly surprised when I do post. Instead of reading this page feeling like its a habit, or being hassled into checking back daily, now you can go about your life (and I can go about my own), then one day we’ll interact and it’ll be a welcome distraction. I’m pretty sure that was the intended purpose of the first blog, back when some schlub living in his parents basement birthed the first one. Then I came along and fucked up the whole premise by scribing a post every single day for, like, seven years. Now I’M the asshole.
I’ve been quite busy of late. I moved into my new place and am getting myself settled. It’s been an expensive month what with moving costs (stupid deposit – why do you have to be the same price as a month’s rent!?) and housing-related purchases. Thankfully after three weeks this finally feels like home. Minus the kitchen. I’ve got way too much pantry space for just myself to use, and my fridge consists of a growler from the Stone brewery (Passion Project) a bottle of pink champagne a friend left in my car one night, and a bunch of microwavable dinners. Yup…I’m really livin’ the high life now!
Speaking of which, I went to the Stone Brewery a couple weeks ago. It was delicious. I was supposed to go with a friend but he got held up, and I wound up dining/imbibing on my own (he wound up eating McDonalds, the poor bastard). I had a delicious bowl of mac and cheese (with sausage, and sundried tomatoes) and then a pulled chicken and wild boar sandwich. It was awesome. Washed down with pints of Stone Matt’s “Burning Rosids” (Imperial CherryWood – Smoked Saison) and Stone Chris Banker/Stone/Insurgente Xocoveza Mocha Stout.
Later that same night I went to see Swans at the Roxy. It was amazing. Two and a half hours, six (maybe seven?) tunes. Deafening. Powerful. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a while, at least since Spiritualized at the Ace way back in February.
I went to Vegas for a night. It was a sloppy mess. I got propositioned by a whore while waiting for the kitchen to re-open at America in the New York New York resort. I sat down to play slots for thirty minutes and, well, I was approached. I wound up letting her play Wheel Of Fortune with $40 while my level of intoxication reached peak-hungry, then I stumbled off (left her $5 and told her she was terrible luck, and that I had to “get back to my wife”) and then I ate the most wan-looking, disgusting omelet ever at some place called the Broadway Burger Bar. I should have just waited for America to re-open. Then I found out my buddy Daniel no longer works at America and so fuck that place, they’ve probably seen the last of me. Then I walked back to my hotel alone at five in the morning, down a surprisingly empty Strip, trying to figure out how to get in contact with Daniel, and wondering how I’d managed to lose $300 at the tables. Then I remembered how my night started by walking from Mirage to New York New York while drinking more two jack-and-cokes at every stop along the way. Sleep didn’t come easy. In the morning there was Dunkin Donuts, sunshine and no sleep by the pool. Eventually I made it back to LA. I guess I’ll return for the November 9 again? WSOP party anyone? No? Oh, okay.
Other than that, Vegas was fine. I moved up a tier in my rewards program so now I get more comps and bigger discounts. It doesn’t help with my degenerate gambling and drinking problem. At least I didn’t pass out in a stranger’s bathroom this trip.
It’s L.A. Beer Week this week, so I’ve got some tastings on my schedule. Maybe I’ll blog about them at the end of the week. Until then, here’s some tunes I’ve been listening to since I last posted. Enjoy.
