Jackie-O Motherfucker – Live On WFMU

This is one of those “albums” (and I use that term loosely because as far as I know it was never officially released) that is of extreme personal importance to me. It’s tied to a very specific memory. And because of the personal nature of this blog, I can actually find the precise moment (blog entry) that details the memory. Day 16 of my cross-country trip back in 2005. Driving through the Texas panhandle, reaching Santa Rosa, New Mexico and encountering a fierce storm. The whole time I was trying to focus on finding the treads of the cars in front of me so I wouldn’t skid off the road I had JOMF’s live session for WFMU playing through my car stereo.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing the Jackie-O Motherfucker live show, you’ve missed out on a beautiful thing. It’s almost like a group exploration involving band and crowd, traversing weird sonic pathways and searching for a common bond. It doesn’t hurt that they’ve been known to pass some grass around and share it with the audience. That’s… like…the physical embodiment of their music….man!

Ahem.

I’ve previously described this recording as one of my favorite JOMF “albums” ever made. It is the essence of the band; a collage of divergent sounds that somehow sound haunting and beautiful when juxtaposed against each other. The turntable manipulations, while not as innovative or experimental as a Christian Marclay, draw together what would otherwise sound like a disjointed cacophony of noise. It is the very definition of bent. I would recommend being very, very stoned when you listen to it.

Okay, I gotta cut this short and fly home. I’m doing this while packing and I need to leave in a couple minutes.
