I’ve owned this in three different formats throughout the years but eventually settled on the 1989 original LP as the keeper of the bunch. If I cared more about 7″s I probably would have kept this, but I was happy to file it away for a while and I was happy to get decent money back for it when I sold it. I only have two boxes of 7″ records in my collection and try to only buy ones put out by bands whose entire discographies I’d like to own. You won’t find a lot of one-offs in there unless it’s just a really good song. Brian Eno‘s “Seven Deadly Fins” or “Paranoid Time” by the Minutemen are exceptions to the rule. Otherwise my collection consists of the early Grandaddy singles, Cows singles, Flipper singles and others. I’d be shocked if there were more than 200 in those boxes. And honestly I don’t think any of them are all that valuable. If I had to guess, maybe the first Grandaddy single is the best one I own? I know the one-sided Ride 7″ that was sold at one fan club show in 1991 is rare, but I don’t think it’s valuable. I do still own one Killdozer 45 — for “The Pig Was Cool” / “Unbelievable” — but I sold the For Ladies Only set and kept the LP.
If you’re unfamiliar with the release, it’s a collection of covers that were divided onto five 7″ 45s. The trio tackled everything from Neil Young (“Mr. Soul”) to Mott The Hoople and Don McLean (“American Pie” in two parts). But my favorite cut from this album was the Conway Twitty tune, “You’ve Never Been This Far Before” which has to be one of the creepiest, sleaziest songs ever written. Have you seen this video? It’s disturbing. Look at the way his hand is resting in between his legs, tapping out the beat. When the camera zooms in, it’s not hard to imagine Conway massaging himself to the thought of a young, chaste girl. Probably underaged. I’m not saying Conway was a bad guy or anything, but the guy in that video? He needs to be locked up.
There are reasons to appreciate the 7″ box set, like the beefcake photos of the band that accompany the discs along with the bios for each band member. The liner notes make sure to mention unicorns a lot. You know, because ladies like unicorns and these songs are for ladies only. There’s a German picture disc too (with a pair of tits on it!), which I owned for a while, but sold when I finally found an original LP with the insert. I don’t think the colored vinyl 7″ set included the quiz, which is probably why I kept the LP in the long run. That thing is genius. “Dan’s Kiss Quiz” it’s called. Check it out:

Oh, right. I found this at Amoeba in Hollywood on December 5th, 2007. It set me back $6.99. I’m looking for an upgrade copy if anyone wants to sell me theirs. It’s gotta be mint/mint and have the original inner sleeve with the kiss quiz on it. Without that thing, you might as well go fuck yourself!
