Here’s a rare one you don’t see every day. And, in fact, I’ve only ever seen one. This one. But apparently a few more exist, as auction results dating back to 2009 show it’s kind of a collectible LP! As recently as two years ago it was selling for $150. That said, it just might be the most collectible pizza hut memento in existence. Certainly it’s more scarce than those inflatable basketballs they used to give away during March Madness when I was growing up in New Jersey.
Well, I just used my workplace’s marketplace research software to determine that the most expensive Pizza Hut memento sold this year was an electric guitar shaped like a Pizza Hut pizza. I guess this record will have to settle for being the second most collectible item manufactured by Pizza Hut.
Ugh. Two paragraphs and already this post sounds like a giant ad for Pizza Hut. Ironic considering I’ve been boycotting the company since 2008.
As far as radio spots are concerned, I’m sure most collector scum would rather hear cuts for films or albums than this. Pizza Hut ’73 is sort of music-related, in that Rich Little provides impersonations of Johnny Cash, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley and Bing Crosby, but it’s still mostly cheesy (pun intended?) advertising jingles.
As for its distribution, one could infer from the packaging that it was a giveaway at the Pizza Hut Annual Meeting, which occurred between January 7-10, 1973 at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego, California.
And the jingles? Fucking weird. The ‘A’ side is self-explanatory, as Rich Little provides his impersonations in 30 and 60-second ads. The ‘B’ side ventures off into stranger territory, as the 2-minute “Pizza Hut Theme” is followed by two tracks called “Just Be Yourself” and “Something You Can’t Get Just Any Places,” which I think are original compositions. One of which is filled with sexual innuendos. Very, very odd…
Oh, and since I haven’t really written about them since my 2008 boycott was announced, I think it bears repeating: Fuck Pizza Hut.
