Awesome 25-track compilation by one of the greatest American bands of the past 50 years. What you’re getting here, for all intents and purposes, is Philosophy Of The World and Shaggs’ Own Thing. If you haven’t heard either, this should be more than just a primer, it’s practically all the recorded output plus some home recordings and one live cut.
There’s really not much more I can tell you that most of you don’t already know. For the uninitiated I suggest browsing the Wiggins’ Wikipedia page for all pertinent background information. If you’re familiar with the first album and are wondering what the other cuts are, they’re from a 1975 recording session that had gone unreleased due to the death of Austin (the band members’ father and manager) and the band’s subsequent disbanding. Shaggs’ Own Thing features several covers of popular songs of the early 1970s in addition to original songs. It also marks the appearance of two male Shaggs: the girls’ dad Austin Wiggin Jr. and his adolescent son Robert.
