Surely you are familiar with Angelus Records. Well…maybe you’re familiar with Angelus Records. If you’ve ever heard the impossibly-rare, hard-rocking psych album Moon Blood by the LA group Fraction, you might recognize the Glendale-based Angelus label. Garage Hangover boasts a formidable discography for the heavily Christian-leaning label. It’s incomplete, but it’s also filled with intriguing titles: “What Do I Love?” by a group called Acid Test, “Get All Excited With Master Design” by Master Design, and plenty of spiritual/religious recordings.

One record that is, as of this moment, missing from the site’s Angelus Records discography is WR-4617. It’s two sides recorded by Dr. Joseph Murphy, who might have been a preacher, or might have been a shrink…I like to pretend he was a budding L. Ron Hubbard who tried to meld the worlds of religion and psychology for personal gain. While that’s probably not the case, it certainly makes listening to this record a more entertaining experience. Murphy’s collected spoken-word pieces are available on CDs called, “The Master Key To Wealth” and “The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind.” For Angelus Records, Murphy recorded two sides: “Your Right To Be Rich” and “How To Forgive.”

I’m sure this album has little-to-no value, but it’s always fun to track down records that share a label in common with a monster like the Fraction record. I had my hands on an original Moon Blood LP a few months ago and less than 24-hours later it sold for $3,000. Now it’s been reissued by Mexican Summer, but for hardcore collectors an original is still considered a “holy grail.” Dr. Murphy’s LP probably isn’t worth 1% of what a clean copy of Fraction album commands, but it’s a relic from a record label that was responsible for producing one of the most sought-after American psych/rock records of the last forty years. To me, that makes it special.
