Today I had the pleasure of learning about Camera 3. Other than Andy Johnson (who you might know more for his artistic output, he designed most of the artwork for his brother Matt’s band, The The) the members of Camera 3 originally consisted of Paul Miller, Graham Weston, Mark Rowlatt, and Anton Loach. If the names Rowlatt and Loach sound familiar to you it’s because they were two-fourths of Metabolist, one of the experimental/industrial bands of the late 70s and eary 80s. Perhaps you remember Hansten Klork? Camera 3’s first single, “Russians In Space” was recorded at Metabolist Studios, which is where Stagmanaut and Hansten Klork were recorded.
Love Like Acid is an incredibly hard-to-find cassette-only release which was released on Simon Millward’s (Metabolist’s bassist, vocalist, and synth programmer) Cassette King label. According to the Atlantic Audio Archive: for this recording drummer Mark Rowlatt was replaced by K. Shillingford. “Needless to say, the drumming here is quite different. This could have more to do with the slower tempo on these tracks compared to the 7”. The only time the tempo really picks up here (on the last track), the drums aren’t quite driving the music along as they did on their previous recordings. The title track begins with a bass kick and rim shots like Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” This track ends abruptly into the next track (Exploitation), so they are combined in this rip.”
Enjoy!
