The For Carnation – 2000-07-31 Jailhouse Rock Cafe; Montreal, QC

Ah, yes. It was almost thirteen years ago…THIS VERY NIGHT!…that Brian McMahan, Michael McMahan, Steve Goodfriend, Todd Cock and Bobb Bruno — wait a minute, THAT Bobb Bruno!? THE FUCKING BEST COAST GUY!? Ugh…I’m going to have to reevaluate my stance on that guy — took the stage in Montreal, Quebec in support of the recently-released eponymously-titled second album by the For Carnation.

For fifty-seven VERY QUIET minutes, the band worked through some songs from that album as well as some of their “hits” (ha!) off 1996’s Marshmallows (John Herndon and Doug McCombs of Tortoise fame played on that one, not the fucking drummer from Best Coast). Also, that one from the What’s Up Matador compilation I can’t recall ever having heard before. Anyway, I was fresh out of high school then, but still a month away from beginning my college career at the University of Vermont. Alas, I was not around for this show. It’s a damned shame, too, because there hasn’t been another For Carnation album released since the self-titled one (unless you count the reissue of Promised Works). Then again, The For Carnation is such a perfect album it’d be hard to come up with anything better. Seriously, if I had to rank the ten best albums of the 2000s (we can do that now, right? Enough time has passed?) that would easily be on the list, if not in the top 5. I smell a Friday Top Ten coming soon.

Enjoy the show!
