Two of my most favorite things in the whole world — Russian history and outer space — finally available for the first time in one place on a monaural 45rpm 7″ EP.
“On April 12th, 1961 at precisely 9:07am the USSR space-ship “Vostok” with a man on board was launched into space. The space-ship orbited the Earth at a speed of 18,000mph at a distance ranging from 112 to 203 miles, after which the pilot, Major Yuri Gagarin of the USSR Air Force, born March 9th, 1934 in the Smolensk Region of the USSR, Mankind’s first Cosmonaut, successfully returned to Earth. The unique and historical record of this epoch making event contains the following:–
April 12th, 1961. 10.02am Moscow Radio announcing to the peoples of the USSR and the World that the “Vostok” had been successfully launched and was in orbit.
English translation and commentary.
Some bars of the song that Yuri Gagarin sang during his descent back to Earth.
Gagarin speaking prior to his entering the Space-ship, with English translation.
Gagarin actually communicating with Earth during orbit, with English translation.
April 14th, 1961. The Red Square, Moscow. Reception to Gagarin. Gagarin’s speech and translation.
Premier Nikita Krushchev’s speech and translation.
April 16th, 1961. The Press Conference held at the Scientists’ Club, Moscow.
Speech by Academician A.N. Nesmeyanov, Presdient of the USSR Academy Of Sciences, with English translation.
Conclusion with another of Yuri Gagarin’s favorite songs, “I love you, life”.
This record is subtitled “Historical Documentary Record Of The First manned Space-Orbit Flight By Major Yuri Gagarin”. It was a commemorative record released in collaboration with Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga, USSR, with acknowledgements to the USSR Academy of Sciences. It comes housed in a full-color picture sleeve with glory-shot of Major Gagarin.
It’s all kinds of awesome.
