Werkbund – Rungholt

Werkbund were a somewhat-enigmatic industrial/experimental band from Hamburg, Germany. According to the band’s bio, the sound “deals mainly with marine tales and myths from Northern Germany.” Between the years of 1987 and 2010, the group recorded seven albums and a limited edition CD, and currently it is not known who the artists are. Kind of like The Residents, right? It has been GUESSED that Felix Kubin and Uli Rehberg and other artists from Hamburg MIGHT be involved. Some people pretend that both Werkbund and Michthild Von Leusch involve the collaboration of Asmus Tietchens and Uli Rehberg, though Asmus Tietchens repeatedly and vehemently denied any participation in the band. The guys over at Mutant Sounds pretty much consider Werkbund and Michthild Von Leusch “sister project(s),” with Tietchens and Rehberg creating the music. If Rehberg’s name sounds familiar it’s because he is the founder of Walter Ulbricht Schallfolien, the German label responsible for releasing music by Throbbing Gristle, Hafler Trio, Laibach and more. Is there a connection? Probably. WUS released a few of Werkbund’s later records, and I doubt people would make the connections to Tietchens and Rehberg if there wasn’t something substantial to them. Is it better to listen with an air of mystic? As if this is coming from strangers living in parts unknown? Duh!

I wish I understood German. I love marine tales and myths!
