Sarah Jaffe / Deradoorian / Chelsea Wolfe @ First Unitarian Church; Los Angeles, CA

I made my mind up at 5pm. I didn’t think there was any way I could make it to the Troubadour to see Pallbearer at 9pm then back to the church in Koreatown by 10:30 to see Chelsea. So I stayed at home and drank until it was time go. It was way more relaxing than driving back and forth across town would have been, I’m sure. Hopefully Pallbearer will come back to LA soon.

I might as well have walked to the church from home considering how far away I had to park. This caused me to miss 3/4 of opener Sara Jaffe‘s set. I grabbed a beer as the stage was prepped for Deradoorian and slunk into a seat somewhere between the fourth and fifth row on the floor on the right side of the room. Her set was pretty good. Her voice had this Mary Timony thing going on that brought me back to my freshman year of high school when I was an introverted, social-anxiety ridden dork who wrote way too many diary entries for somebody his age and gender. But…God, did I love Mary Timony. Deradoorian impressed me more than I thought she would. Great voice, decent musical ability, strong songs.

Chelsea Wolfe took the stage after an awkward false start and worked her way through a very strong set amid a lighting guy who must have had no idea what the hell he was doing and a sound guy who might not have had any insight into how the acoustics inside a church typically work. The low-end threatened to suffocate all other sounds coming from the stage. Because of this the songs that were just her and guitar, piano, or a cappella, sounded the best. In the middle of the set she introduced a new song which she described as “a love song.” Since she didn’t scan the audience and point to anyone else, I can only assume that it’s about me.
