Ruth White – 7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards

Just in case you weren’t aware of how influential my blog is, check out this eBay auction. The seller is not only proud enough of his discovery to include my write-up as a testament to how great the Jerry Solomon record is, he went so far as to provide a print out OF MY FACE and used it as the primary image for his auction. To be fair, the record in question appears to be absolutely HAMMERED, so I guess my beautiful visage is an attempt to distract potential bidders from looking at the horribly worn labels. Then again, the surface noise and skips described in the body of the listing should do a good enough job of detailing how wrecked the record is. Oh well. My face on eBay. I never thought I’d see the day…

Yesterday I shared with you the Ruth White record Flowers Of Evil. Today it’s 7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards, her second album recorded for the Limelight label. Although not as incredible as that record, this one is still really, really good.

In 1967 White was commissioned by choreographer Eugene Loring (for the University of California) to create the music for a performance called “Seven Trumps From The Tarot Cards And Pinions.” Not only was the event a huge success, but it was something of a coming-out party for White. “The Los Angeles Times reviewed ‘Seven Trumps’ as ‘…a really exciting, organically musical, electronic score…Not only the soloists but all the participants seemed to draw heat from this score…’. Dance Magazine said ‘choreographed on contrasting planes, ‘Pinions’ comments on the wings of imagination and love, the shackles of philistinism, and always, Ruth White’s specially written and especially eloquent score heightens the drama of the dance while plumbing its depths…” Two years later, the score was released by Limelight.

Here it is for your listening pleasure. Enjoy.
