I have a hard time believing anyone who reads SF could be unfamiliar with KK Null and/or Zeni Geva. Alas, some of you aren’t here every day, so allow me to give you a condensed biography:
ZG is a Japanese noise/rock group that pretty much features two constant members, singer/guitarist Kazuyuki (KK) Null and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida. There are a lot of past members, including Mitsuru Tabata (guitarist/synthesizer for a long time), Eito Noro (drums in the early/mid ’90s), Masataka Fujikake (drums in the late ’90s through the mid-’00s), and for one very brief stint in 1988, Bunsho Nishikawa on bass. Not a lot of bass guitar in the ZG sound. Mostly loud guitar and drums.
Zeni Geva translates (roughly) to “money violence” from the “Zeni” old Japanese word for money and “Geva” being short for the German “Gewalt” or “violence.” The band’s sound ranges from noise to hardcore punk to death metal and math rock. One critic described their ’90s albums as sounding like Motorhead meets King Crimson. Steve Albini has stated that ZG is one of his favorite bands, citing their wide range of influences and their diverse and challenging sound. He has also said — according to the band’s website – that he “admires the way Zeni Geva embrace the Japanese culture in their sound rather than trying to Westernize it.” He’s engineered a number of albums for the group, including Total Castration, Desire For Agony, Freedom Bondage, and 10,000 Light Years. He also performed live with the band in 1992. Those recordings were issued as All Right, You Little Bastards in 1993.
Tracks 1 through 8 were recorded live to 16-track at 20,000 Volts in Tokyo on March 31st, 1992. Tracks 9-12 were recorded live to DAT at Fandango in Osaka on April 3rd, 1992.
