Where else are you going to find Dinosaur (Jr.!), Volcano Suns, Squirrel Bait, Big Black, Naked Raygun, Big Dipper and others all in the same place!?
…If you answered “Uh…one of Evan’s wet dreams?” you’d probably be correct.
There isn’t too much to say about this other than it’d make an excellent soundtrack for any of those moments (and God knows there’s enough of ’em!) when your nose is shoved deep into that worn out copy of “Our Band Could Be Your Life” you’re always carrying around. Get a job, you stupid hipster dufus!
That guy who comments over here…what’s his name…from One Base On An Overthrow, he wrote about this comp a few years ago on his blog. Without getting too much into it, he describes the album as “fill[ing] a need at the time — meaning that it gave the out-of-touch conventional music writers some help with their catching up, or in putting a stamp on the scene, or whatever.” He goes on to say that, “one of the obscure references on this record…is the ‘Blasting Variations big deal’ etching on one of the runout grooves, a reference to the SST ‘Blasting Concept’ samplers which ‘The Wailing Ultimate’ sorta takes after. The other runout groove reads, ‘just like Motown for whitey,’ which probably would’ve made for a much better title than ‘The Wailing Ultimate,’ except nobody bothered to ask me.”
Funny guy, that Overthrow…
