Recorded live at Cairo, Wurzburg on June 12th, 2003. Where is that, Germany?
There was a period in the ’00s when Circle was one of the most prolific bands on the planet. Machinefabriek was up there, Aidan Baker was up there, Skaters were up there…but Circle was definitely one of the leaders in average-number-of-releases-per-year. Acid Mothers Temple might be the only ones who pose a serious threat to that title. In 2007 they released more than a half-dozen albums, including this live spectacle that ranks up there with some of the best and most intense spaced-out jams the band has performed.
The 23-minute “Metsan Henget/Tavaton” is twelve minutes of grooviness followed by a sparser kosmiche section and a rousing conclusion with all kinds of far-out effects and vocals. The 20-minute “Huurre” is like tongue-in-cheek Neu! as it keeps repeating the same thing over and over again with only the most subtle of changes for its duration. Album closer Kaarre (it’s 33-minutes long, so settle in) features Sula Bassana on bass guitar (the credits refer to it as “Spacebass”) and best exemplifies the greatness of this double-disc set. It builds for nine minutes, settles into a great groove for the middle fifteen minutes, and then freaks out for the remaining five. Great motorik drumming. They sound like an angrier Can. It’s awesome.
The whole thing is awesome. Check it out for yourself.
