I performed my own little social experiment tonight. I refilled the prescription pills I was given to control my weird stomach issues. Then I left the bottle on the kitchen counter to see if anyone would try to steal them. No one did. Then, for the first time in maybe ten years, I looked at the name of the medication and decided to research it on Wikipedia.
Did you know that Hyoscyamine is a “tropane alkaloid” that is found in henbane (which was historically used in “magic brews” due to its psychoactive properties), mandrake (“…it induces a state of oblivion and was used as an anesthetic for surgery in ancient times”), jimsonweed (I think we’ve all read enough Carlos Castaneda books to know all about jimsonweed), and DEADLY NIGHTSHADE, which is just about the coolest name ever given to anything on the face of the earth. Deadly nightshade is also known as Belladonna. The description of Deadly nightshade begins, “The foliage berries are extremely toxic, containing tropane alkaloids. These toxins include scopolamine and hysocymaine which cause bizarre delirium and hallucinations.”
You guys…do you think I should be taking these pills?
The answer, of course, is yes. Because according to Wikipedia hyoscyamine “may be useful in pain control for neuropathic pain treated with opiods as it increases the level of analgesia obtained.” You guys, no wonder painkillers have such wonderful effects on me. I’m apparently mixing painkillers with a medication that is made to help increase the amount of painkillers my body can absorb. Sweeeeet!
Also, the idea of medicine seems totally fucked up to me right now!
