Al Horowitz – Learn To Play Chess The Easy Way

Here’s a sweet LP that found its way into my life recently. It’s recorded instructions on how to play chess, as narrated by three-time U.S. Open champion Al Horowitz! He was also the editor of the Chess Review, author of over a dozen books, internationally known teacher/lecturer, and the chess columnist for the New York Times. Each LP came packaged with a 12-inch LP instruction record, a gatefold chess board, and 32 “tournament-size” chessmen. This all-in-one package is almost as fantastic as the LP that self-taught you how to correct your vision without the use of glasses.

The liner notes state, “Hundreds of people have paid Al Horowitz large fees for his private chess lessons. Now, in the privacy of your own home you and your youngsters can have this famous master teach YOU how to play the game.

“The record starts with the simple basics: How to set up the board for play and how the pieces move and capture. Then you are “talked” through a real game as you actually move the pieces on your own board. Listen, as step-by-step, Horowitz explains each move, why it was made and what the counter move should be. Then he analyzes the strategy. He shows how an attack is planned and how pieces are defended.

“This is truly the easy way to learn chess because you LISTEN to the instruction while you SEE the pieces being moved on the board. No need to read pages of print or study complicated diagrams before you start playing. It’s like having the instructor at your elbow…YOUR OWN PRIVATE TUTOR and you begin a real chess game in a matter of minutes. It makes learning to play chess an exciting adventure.”

So, there you have it. An exciting adventure awaits you. Dust off your old chess board, download this original recording from 1967, and have fun playing the greatest game ever conceived! Well, greatest next to baseball. And football. And poker. And Mario Kart. And that one that the college kids played in the movie “The Program” where they stand on the train tracks and see who can stay on the longest while a train rushes towards them.
