Sunday Mix Tape Number 271

Alright kids, it’s Mix Tape time. But before we begin I have just one thing to say:

Ah, shit. Lost it.

You know, I didn’t mention this on Friday, but August 3rd marked the 8th anniversary of the passing of Bob Murphy. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Murph, he was the Mets radio announcer for over forty years. His was the voice I grew up with, relating hundreds if not thousands of baseball games to me with his unmistakable voice. Friends and I often argue about baseball versus football and which sport is better, and Bob Murphy is one of the reasons I will always be a baseball guy. I remember being at summer camp in the early ’90s and walking up to the highest point in camp, to a little bench at the far end of a soccer field, and sitting there during “free play” after dinner, straining to hear the WFAN broadcast of Mets games. I remember even earlier than that, when I used to have a tiny portable radio that I would hide in bed with me at night so I could listen to games on school nights. I can’t even remember how many times my mom yelled at me to turn off the radio and go to sleep. It was always Bob Murphy (later with Gary Cohen) calling the games. I must have fallen asleep to his voice more times than I can count. I don’t often listen to Mets games anymore. As good as Howie Rose is at calling a game, it’ll never feel as familiar and comforting as it was when Bob Murphy was in the booth. If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, check out Murph calling the final inning of the 1973 Mets winning the National League championship. [YouTube/Audio]

Ok, now your mix tape.

RULES for uninitiated noobs: I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I’ll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. The theme this week should be pretty obvious. You know, since the news tonight has been consistently reporting on a single story…The goal of this endeavor, as always, is to pique your interest in these artists so you’ll support the artists and buy their albums.
