Finally, my Codeine ‘When I See The Sun’ box set arrived yesterday. I listened to the remastered ‘Frigid Stars’ (meh! sounds about the same!) and the outtakes/demos disc (great acoustic version of “Pea” and a couple of songs that would have sounded entirely out of place on the album). Now I’m working my way through ‘Barely Real’ and its outtakes/demos disc. I always forget how integral David Grubbs was to that EP. Aside from the piano on “W.” he helped out on “A L’Obre de Nous” (which was on the Codeine/Bastro split 7″) and played guitar on “Tom” and “Wird” on ‘The White Birch’. I like that guy. ‘Barely Real’ has a full band version of “Broken Hearted Wine” on it, which I think was only previously available on the “Realize” single, but there’s an AMAZING solo guitar version that showed up on the various artists compilation “The John Peel Sub Pop Sessions 1989-1993,” which I’ll include in this week’s mix tape because I find it to be incredibly moving.
Speaking of mix tapes, here’s this week’s! I’ll give my final thoughts on the entirety of the Codeine box set later this week. Once I’ve listened to everything.
