Intersystems – Free Psychedelic Poster Inside

Initially released in 1968 as a privately pressed LP.

“Like Peachy, this privately released LP is a clear improvement on the debut (Number One), both in terms of narration and overall artistic coherence. A storyline about a little plastic boy and girl goes through all kinds of surreal and spooky twists, delivering a criticism of straight society that is typical of the era. There is a fine balance between the spoken word element and the oscillator sine waves, static noise and sound effects, which are allowed to develop their own identity rather than being limited to an atmospheric backdrop. The narration is done in a formal, almost robotic manner which fits well with the overall theme, as do the electronics and stereo effects, which are employed even more than on Number One. There are long passages of nothing but machine noise which become oddly effective, especially if allowed to blend in with whatever room ambience the listener is in. One segment uses a drum machine-like beat with moog glissandos, thus clearly approaching modern ambient sounds, while the last track is perhaps the best thing the band did. While this is closer to John Cage-type avant-garde than rock music, the era it was made in and the clear freak feel of the intersystems outfit make for a psychedelic experience for those open to an unusual and occasionally challenging aural trip. Impressive, ahead of its time, a must to genre fans. Generous playtime too. Originally created as a soundtrack for an installation in Montreal 1968. The band leader would later for Syrinx, who cut two LPs of progressive electronics on the True North label in the early 1970s.” – Acid Archives
