My introduction to Ganger came via Ian, who told me I needed — NEEDED — to hear this record called Hammock Style. I called that album “one of the most overlooked Post-Rock records to come out of the ’90s,” and described the group as being a less-aggressive Mogwai, with elements of Tortoise’s experimentation, but still unique.
Fore is a compilation that includes cuts from various Eps, except for the title-track, which was previously unreleased. Tracks #2, 4, and 7 are from the hilariously-titled EP called “The Cat’s In The Bag… The Bag’s In The River.” Oh, dead cat jokes. Are any of them not the funniest joke you’ve ever heard!?
Some background info on Ganger: formed in Glasgow, Scotland, members of the band also played with Bis, Aerogramme, and Fukuyama. Wikipedia (all hail all-knowing Wikipedia!) states, “The band showed obvious influences from Krautrock bands such as Faust, Neu!, and Ash Ra Tempel, and their debut EP Half Nelson was released in 1996 on Glasgow label Vesuvius.” Perhaps, unsurprisingly, the Wikipedia entry cites both Mogwai and Tortoise as sound-alike bands. See, I was so far ahead of the curve on Ganger that whoever wrote their Wikipedia entry must have read my little review first! I’m famous! Yay! Finally!
Move over, cougars. Now that I’m famous I can get chicks who are closer to my own age!
