L.S. Bearforce – L.S. Bearforce

A local punk/new wave DJ was in the store earlier this week and we got to chatting about prog records as he sifted through a bunch of new vinyl. He grabbed a dozen or so records he wanted to test to hear whether or not he could use them for his radio show or DJ gig, so we set up a little portable turntable and he went about his business. When he started to play the first track on L.S. Bearforce, the eponymous album recorded by Lotus Schmidt (Spacebox/Embryo), Edgar Hoffman (Spacebox/Embryo) Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru), and others, I think we both commented that this was dance-y enough Krautrock for him to use at an upcoming DJ gig.

L.S. Bearforce features six percussion-heavy songs that sound like late-era Guru Guru (which isn’t a good thing as far as I’m concerned), but with a freer, improvisational feel that was missing from those albums. Some of these songs have a tendency to just kind of wander aimlessly, but it’s still an interesting, upbeat listen. The more experimental, noisier moments are few and far between, but they definitely add a bit of originality to some otherwise stilted songs. WHAT SAY YOU, LISTENER?

Also, kind of an awesome band name? I wish the “L.S.” was removed and it was simply BEARFORCE (I would totally see a band called BEARFORCE), but I can live with it if they can.
