Nig-Heist – Snort My Load

We’ve covered rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, punk rock, post-rock, and plenty of other subgenres — so let’s explore the world of shock rock, shall we!?

Most people know Nig-Heist as the roadies for Black Flag, but the band was pretty much a free-for-all. The roadies, sound crew, and even members of Black Flag would pick up instruments and play along during live shows. Pretty much the only constant was “Mugger” (aka Steve Corbin). After becoming disenchanted with the suburban hardcore scene (along with most of the Black Flag crew) he decided to antagonize the scene. He would taunt the skinheads and punks who turned up to Black Flag shows by baiting the crowd with sexual and perverse statements. Nig-Heist’s songs were about as offensive as could be, purposefully explicit and immature in the same ways I try to be sometimes. Nig-Heist and Swan Fungus: a match made in heaven?

The recorded output of Nig-Heist includes a 1983 single for “Walking Down The Street” (artwork by Raymond Pettibon), and an LP called Snort My Load, which features the outstanding artwork featured at the top of this blog post. After becoming a prominent member of the SST label, Mugger left the label and made millions of dollars in the computer industry. I think it had something to do with the stock market. I don’t know.

A brilliant Amazon.com user review of Nig-Heist (the 1998 compilation released on Drag City) states: “This album has affected me in ways too numerous to contemplate. I’ve often found myself with a woman, and, where I’d normally grow increasingly confused and frustrated, instead, asked myself the question: ‘What would Mugger do?’ Turning myself over to Mugger has invariably led me down the correct path. Of course, this is only one example: the Nig Heist paint a philosophical landscape devoid of the ethical paradoxes and emotional dead-ends associated with most mainstream belief systems; this album is a veritable ‘Guide to Life’. Please, do yourself and your loved ones a favor by bringing this poignant and profound contribution to the musical cosmos into your life.”
