Dedalus hailed from Italy, near Turin (Torino), recording two records for the much-desired Trident label in the early 1970s. Think of Trident as the Italian equivalent of Ohr or Kosmiche Kuriere. After those two albums, the band all but disappeared.
The first Dedalus album (self-titled) is a renowned progressive album that toed the line between rock and avant-garde. It sounded like a cross between Soft Machine and Stockhausen. The second record, which saw the group shrink to a trio (the bassist left the band) is so much further out, so radically different, I don’t think there’s any way you can describe it as rock, let alone progressive rock. It opens with a half-minute of white noise. Like Stockhausen but noisier. Some might even call it musique concrete. A lot of progressive rock people I know disregard Dedalus as noise, which to me is what makes it so cool!
For all you nerdy collectors out there, these albums (like most on the Trident label) are obscenely rare. Supposedly there is also a promotional-only 7″ that exists featuring two tracks from the first album, but I’ve not seen it, only heard of its existence.
Enjoy.
Oh, and Nurse With Wound List alert. Better late than never.
