El Topo – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

It’s no surprise that one of my favorite films also features one of — in my opinion — the greatest scores. The original pressing was a long-sought-after prize that I wanted desperately to add to my collection. Naturally, most Beatles collectors also desire the Apple Records discography, so prices were pretty high for a while. I found a beautiful copy at WFMU three or four years ago for $8 from a Japanese dealer. Now that I’ve owned it for a few years it has been sadly ignored, but I listened again last night (July 12th, as I am penning this on the morning of the 13th and back-dating it) after returning from a night out on the town and passed out to it. Good times!

I’m not alone in my love for this album. “Noteworthy figures said to be fans of the film include directors David Lynch and Samuel Fuller, actors Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper…and performers Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson, Jarvis Cocker, Peter Gabriel and John Lennon. Gabriel claimed that this movie was an inspiration for the classic Genesis concept album, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. John Barham re-recorded the score for release on Apple Records at the request of John Lennon” (Wikipedia).

The film’s director, Alejandro Jodorowsky, also wrote the film, acted in it, served as production designer and composed the Morricone-esque score. It’s required listening for anyone who enjoys Morricone’s work, or fans of Jodorowsky’s films.
