Tonight, for the second time in three years, White Hills took to the airwaves and rocked the Evan “Funk” Davies show on Jersey’s own free-form radio station WFMU. Davies’ is one of the shows I used to make it my business to hear every week when I was growing up in the Garden State. He, along with Fabio, Bryce and Brian Turner were responsible for a great portion of my musical education. The last time White Hills recorded a session for the show was in April of 2007, just before I moved to LA. Ah, how times have changed. I remember the night that show aired, sitting huddled up to a PC in my mother’s condo in Jersey trying to figure out how the OpD2d stream recording program worked. That was the first time I heard “Don’t Be Afraid,” one of the band’s greatest songs. Once it had ended, I greedily remained at the computer listening back and enjoying the recording through my headphones. Upon surviving “Don’t Be Afraid” for the second time, I again realized (“Again?” you ask? Well, the first time was when I saw them open for Titan in February of ’07) that White Hills was one of the most amazing young bands I’d heard in years. That statement sounds a bit ridiculous when you take into account I was not even 24 years old at the time, but that doesn’t make it any less true!
Anyway, here’s the recording of tonight’s session, which just aired back East and was recorded for your listening pleasure and encoded as well as I could considering I had to use Nicci’s PC to record it and I haven’t touched a PC or tried to record streaming audio with one in three years. Thank God I remembered how to use OpD2d after not touching it or even thinking about it for three years! Thank God it was still available for download, otherwise who the hell knows what I would have done? Oh well, in the end it all worked out. Enjoy!
